Congratulations to Kani Henry, the Fall 2024 recipient of our Genie McMeans Jr. scholarship! Kani is a graduating senior at Sandy Creek High School, where he played basketball and exceled in the school’s International Baccalaureate program. Kai wrote a riveting essaying describing his difficult experience transferring schools, being one of the only black students in his neighborhood, and then experiencing virtual learning through Covid-19. Despite these circumstances, Kani persevered, and his hard work paid off.
What's Next for Kani?
Kani will attend Lagrange College in the fall, where he will major in Sports Management and play collegiate basketball. Kani also plans to be a graduate assistant and obtain a master’s degree. We are honored to have Kani as this semester’s recipient of the Genie McMeans Jr. scholarship, and we are excited to watch him succeed!
More About the Genie McMeans Jr. Scholarship
The Genie McMeans Jr. scholarship is a $500 scholarship awarded twice a year to students who exhibit perseverance through adversity. Genie McMeans Jr., known affectionally as “Junior”, was a first-generation college graduate who sadly became a victim of police brutality shortly after his graduation. He was loving son, brother, uncle, and friend. Although our time with Junior was cut short, we honor his memory by continuing his spirit of scholarship, service, and community.
